WordPress 2.7 is out!

It’s a lot of awesome, so if you are running WordPress, be sure to update!

What mattered to me the most are:

It finally fixed the flash uploader annoyance caused by Flash 10 Player update.
Automatic WordPress update, no more need to FTP!
Customizable User Interface. Good looking and nice!

I did have one problem during the installation. I had Kimili Flash Embed plugin installed, and it broke my visual editor. I had to do some experiment to track down the cause. Appearantly they are aware of the problem and will do an update soon, but for now just deactivate it to fix the problems. Good luck!

P.S. It seems like the email notification is still not working right, at least for me.

WordPress Chinese Encoding Problem Fixed

Did you just upgrade your WordPress? Did you just find out that everything you typed in Chinese turns into “???”? Well I know I did.

Good news, there’s a easy fix, thanks to the WordPress Support Forum Here. If you are too lazy to read it, all you need to do is to comment out/delete the 2 following lines in your wp-config.php file.

define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf8′);
define(‘DB_COLLATE’, ”);

Now the bad news, you need to retype everything that was turned into “???”… Lame.

Sorry Mom, can you retype the comments again?

Update:

I ended up using a WordPress Plugin that converts your whole database to UTF8. If you are interested, you can get it here. The plugin was NOT tested with 2.5.1 though, and it gives you a big red warning sign that you might lose your Database data… I did it anyway, then put the 2 lines back in the config.php, and everything seems to be ok now. I did lose some posts that I had to retype, so your milages may vary. Do it at your own risk.

Our Recent Lack of Update Is Due to…

Us busy watching the Lost DVDs… And what a tiring job it is! Last weekend we blasted through Season 1, which is 24 episodes in 2 days (maybe a couple during the week). Whoa, we didn’t know we can get so tired from just sitting on our butts watching TV! At the end of Season 1 our eyes were so tired and we knew we are going to be super lazy at work on Monday (and we were, and our bodies were sore too!) But we couldn’t wait to start on Season 2! What a great show! Jeannie is kinda mad that I got her started watching it, but now we just want to keep going… We are on Season 2 now and I am predicting another tiring weekend ahead (although we are making plans to go out so we don’t bum through the whole weekend).

In other unrelated news, I just upgraded the Blog to WordPress 2.5, and WOW, what a nice new interface! It’s a pretty awesome FREE blogging tool, so if you are not already, use it/update it/switch over!

WordPress Not Sending Out Email Notifications of New Comments

Ever since I upgraded WordPress to 2.3, I stopped receiving email notifications of new comments, which I didn’t find out until a good deal later. It was pretty frustrating, but after a bit of searching, I guess I wasn’t the only one having the problem.

If you are having the same problem, here are the 2 places that I checked:

Not Receiving Email Notification of New Comments
$phpmailer->Sender line prevents comment notifications from being received

Well, that didn’t really fix it for me. What I had to do was the following:

1. Create an email account with my host. i.e. wordpress@jacknjeannie.com
2. Install the WordPress Plugin – Comments Notifier

I guess the 2.3 upgrade broke something, so if you are having the same problem, good luck to you.

Headers Changed

Been trying to change the look of the site for a while, but I always fall asleep working on it. Finally got the new headers done, and you can see Lorelai added to our header rotation – the picture was taking as part of a fun shoot we had a couple of weekends ago. The pictures will be posted later due to reasons to be disclosed later.

I am hoping to make some more changes sooner or later.

Tagging with WordPress 2.3

Found a nice site that details how to use one of the new functions of WordPress 2.3: Tagging. Turned out that it’s not that hard, since all you have to do is to add a line of PHP code calling the_tags(); function. You can get the whole detail here. Now I just need to remind myself not to go crazy with it.

I guess WP 2.3 also has Tag Clouds built in, but that’s probably too much for the site. Baby steps.

JnJ System Update

We have updated the site to WordPress 2.3, which includes a bunch of good stuff that I’ll probably never use. But no matter, it’s the latest. As usual, I just gunned it and didn’t really do much of a backup, which is generally a very bad idea, but the site still appears to be operational, so all is well. So time to upgrade if you are using WordPress.

After much absence, the beloved JnJ Gallery is finally back in action. You can reach it via the link above the site header. I haven’t had too much time to reconstruct the galleries, so there’s only one in there so far, but as time permits more will be added. So stay tuned, if you are bored.

Jeannie & I are both still incredibly tired All the time, even with the help of my mom at home. We were told that it will get better, repeatedly, but we think it’s just most likely what people say to make us feel better… Godspeed.
